Victoria Park Food Forest
Back in the spring I met with the Victoria Park Neighborhood association to do a presentation about food forestry at the site of their intended community garden. After the presentation they decided to create a combination community garden and food forest. They were unable to use the intended site and were instead allotted a site in Victoria Park. This is fabulous news because this park gets a lot of traffic and hosts festivals all throughout the summer. The more traffic the more exposure, the more people can understand the concept of locally grown organic FREE food. Needless to say I am ecstatic.
Although the city had agreed to give the association the site it wasn’t until late fall that they actually received the plants for the food forest. This would not have been possible if it were not for the persistence and commitment of Charlotte Keeler and her partner Wayne to the food forest vision. They have a wealth of knowledge between them and have committed to stewarding the food forest. As stated before food forestry requires very little maintenance once it is planted because it mimics a forest (bio mimicry). All the plants working together to benefit the entire guild.
We were extremely lucky that day, the sun was shining, the weather was sweet and it really made me just want to move my planting feet:)
